Industrial Surface Preparation Technology Guide

Evaluating Cryogenic Dry Ice Blasting (CO₂) against traditional abrasive sandblasting, soda blasting, and water washing.

How Dry Ice Blasting Works

Dry ice blasting (cryogenic surface decontamination) propels food-grade solid carbon dioxide (CO₂) pellets (-109°F / -78.5°C) using compressed air at speeds exceeding 600–1,000 feet per second. When the pellet impacts the substrate, three mechanisms occur simultaneously: Thermal Shock (rapid freezing contracts the contaminant), Kinetic Impact (shearing the bond), and Micro-Thermal Expansion (instant sublimation into gas expands 800-fold, blowing the contaminant off from beneath).

1. Zero Secondary Waste

In traditional sandblasting or slurry blasting, for every 1 ton of contaminant removed, 10 to 50 tons of toxic abrasive grit, sand, or contaminated wastewater must be collected, contained, and manifested for hazardous disposal. With dry ice, the blasting media sublimates 100% into harmless atmospheric gas, leaving only the dislodged dry contaminant to vacuum or sweep up.

2. Non-Conductive & Completely Dry (In-Situ Electrical Cleaning)

Because solid CO₂ contains zero moisture and is electrically non-conductive (high dielectric strength), industrial technicians can clean de-energized electrical equipment, motor control centers (MCC), transformers, and turbine stators without moisture damage or waiting days for parts to dry. Safety Note: In strict compliance with NFPA 70E and OSHA 1910.333, electrical equipment must be de-energized, isolated, and placed into an electrically safe work condition under Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) protocols prior to blasting. Cryogenic cleaning is never performed on energized circuits.

3. Non-Abrasive: Preserves Tooling Tolerances

Sand, slag, and aluminum oxide permanently erode metal tooling, rounding edges and altering critical dimensional tolerances on injection molds, die-cast tooling, and printing press cylinders. Dry ice is soft (Mohs hardness 1.5–2.0), cleaning delicate polished chrome, copper, and stainless steel without abrasion or etching.
